Keeping Warm

It is a cold winters night in Egoli (the city of Gold). The temps will drop down to 2C tonight so it's time to bundle up - and that's what I am doing with three layers of clothing and getting as close to the ceramic propane heater as possible. Sadza and stew will add some warmth to the stomach!

Six weeks of winter chill between July and August has everyone doing their best to keep comfortable. With no indoor heating other than space heaters a 2C degree temp outside can translate to 10-12C inside. Many cannot afford heaters so it becomes quite unbearable.

Average winter temps range between 4C - 17C although many a night can drop close to freezing. With an altitude of approx 1700 metres this is not surprising. Fortunately most days are sunny and mid-day temps can be quite comfortable.
