'Simunye' from the Prairies

Simunye - 'We are one' (Zulu)

Imagine a dream: A vision of exploring the world. An idea of discovering what it would be like to be transformed by people and ideas from another cultural. Think of engaging with community to build long lasting relationships that span the globe.  Imagine a dynamic, exciting world class travelling opportunity - and you begin to have an idea of what 'Simunye' is all about.

On July 3rd, 2011 a group of young men and women from Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba landed at the ORT International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa. With a warm welcome from Prairie folk  living in Jozi they began a  three week adventure that is sure to reorient their perpsective on Africa and the global community.

Initial exposures including visiting the Apartheid Museum (JHB) and the Voortreker Monument (Pretoria) to get a taste of some of the realities that have shaped this land and being introduced to MCC work and workers in the region. The group have since moved to Nelspruit to work with the Desmond Tutu Centre for Leadership Youth Camps. Subsequently they will makes stops in Swaziland, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and then return to Johannesburg before flying back to Canada.

It was great to connect with former colleagues and acquaintences and make new friends. We look forward to this being an ongoing interaction between the prairies and southern Africa. Simunye indeed!
