Give us this day our daily bread . . .

Sunday morning - Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Reference: Matthew 6: Give us this day our daily bread...

Representatives of Emthonjeni Fountain of Life Centre (a response by the church to the AIDS pandemic in Sweetwaters) brought the focus and reflection for the day.

After an introduction to Emthonjeni and its attempt to respond to community issues around HIV/AIDS Pastor Trevor from a Soweto Vineyard Church spoke. He eloquently reminded us that the passage in the Lord's Prayer where it says 'give us this day our daily bread' is not spoken in the singular but in the plural. In the Aramaic in which it would have been articulated it referenced the broader community. Jesus was teaching us to ask for the things that would sustain the entire community as opposed to a personal agenda. To often in our time we have made this an individualistic request ignoring those around us. That is a distortion of the message and results in a distortion in the community allowing some to be content with personal accumulation while others do not have enough. Pastor Trevor invited us to pray this prayer anew with an understanding that we were praying for and entering the life of the communities in which we lived and worked.
